The Louisiana Supreme Court is considering a significant change that could affect attorneys aged 65 and older who remain in full-time active practice.
Here’s what you need to know:
- Starting January 1, 2026, attorneys who transfer to Emeritus status and voluntarily limit their practice will be exempt from Mandatory Continuing Legal Education (MCLE) requirements under Rule XXX.
- Because of this new option, the Court is proposing to eliminate the current blanket MCLE exemption for attorneys 65 and older who continue practicing full-time. This means all actively practicing attorneys, regardless of age, would be required to comply with MCLE requirements (unless another exemption applies).
The Supreme Court wants your feedback before moving forward.
